Harry’s restaurant is named after Harry Hems, a master carver who occupied the premises following its design and construction by the architect Robert Medley Fulford in 1882. Harry arrived in Exeter in 1886 to work on the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. On arrival, he found a horseshoe lying in the road, which he interpreted as a lucky omen and so decided to settle in Exeter. The premises were then known as ‘Ye Luckie Horseshoe Studios; the lucky horseshoe can still be seen above the main door of the restaurant. On 4th December each year, Harry hosted a Christmas dinner for the aged poor – this tradition is still commemorated at Harry’s with an annual charity dinner.
